Why You’ll Appreciate This Recipe
If you’ve avoided tuna due to the aroma from canned varieties, fresh tuna offers a totally different experience. There’s no unpleasant fishiness—just a gentle flavour, a firm (meaty) bite, and beautiful cooking exactly the way you want.
The method is quick, simple, and remarkably adaptable. Much like a good steak, tuna can be prepared to the doneness you like and seasoned to match your preferences. The Asian-inspired teriyaki marinade brings extra flavour depth without overwhelming the fish.
It also makes a fantastic high-protein choice. Tuna naturally contains lots of protein, so it’s ideal for a quick, filling meal that doesn’t demand much effort.
What You’ll Need
Fresh tuna steak: I’ve tested this recipe using Albacore and yellowfin tuna (also called ahi tuna from Hawaii). Both turn out perfectly in the air fryer.
Cooking oil spray
Tuna steak marinade
Soy sauce
Mirin
Garlic
Ginger
For serving
Green onions
Sesame seeds
How to Prepare Air Fryer Tuna Steaks
Mix the marinade by combining soy sauce, mirin, garlic, and ginger in a shallow bowl.
Dry the tuna steaks using paper towel, then add them to the marinade. Flip once or twice so they’re coated thoroughly. Let them marinate for 15-30 minutes.
Preheat the air fryer to 170°C/350°F for 3-5 minutes.
Lightly mist the air fryer basket with oil.
Set the tuna steaks in the basket, spray with oil, and cook for 2 minutes—adjust based on thickness and the doneness you want. Cook an additional 1-2 minutes for a well-done steak.
Take them out of the air fryer, slice across the grain, and serve right away.
Note: Avoid overcooking, since tuna can turn dry and chewy.

How to Serve
I enjoy serving tuna steak over ramen (see the photo below) or with chimichurri sauce alongside fresh herby or buttery potatoes. I also like to chop it up and use it as a sandwich filling with some baguette, or spoon it into a rice bowl.
How to Store
Keep leftover tuna in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Warm it in the air fryer, or eat it chilled in salads or sandwiches. Don’t reheat for too long, otherwise it may dry out.
