Blue Moon Curaçao Vodka Cocktail with Coconut and Cardamom
The enchanting Blue Moon Cocktail blends Blue Curaçao Vodka, coconut milk, cardamom simple syrup, and a playful candied orange twist, making it just right for moonlit get-togethers.
Blue Moon Cocktail
Some evenings feel like they’re meant for a little ritual.
Not anything elaborate, just a simple gesture with meaning behind it. A quiet pause under a night sky. A moment to take in the moon’s silver light when it seems to shine a bit more brilliantly than usual. That’s always what a Blue Moon has felt like to me: uncommon, a little mysterious, and absolutely worth marking.
When I set out to craft a cocktail inspired by a Blue Moon, I kept coming back to the idea of origins. While many spirits start with grains warmed by the sun, vodka is often linked to potatoes, growing quietly beneath the surface in rich earth. That contrast felt symbolic in the best way. Moon above, soil below. One glowing and far away, the other grounded and nourishing.
This Blue Moon Cocktail pulls those elements together in one glass. Bold blue Curaçao calls to mind a moonlit sky, coconut milk adds a soft creaminess, and cardamom brings in a hint of warmth that feels almost spellbinding. Topped with a sparkling candied orange ribbon, it’s elegant without being serious, and playful enough for any evening worth remembering.
Why You’ll Love This Blue Moon Cocktail
A Blue Moon doesn’t come around often, and this cocktail feels like the perfect way to celebrate it.
Its vivid blue hue makes an instant impression, which is why it works so well for parties, celestial-themed gatherings, special evenings on the patio, or any occasion that deserves a little extra flair. Vodka and Blue Curaçao create a smooth, citrusy base, while coconut milk brings a lush, silky feel that makes the drink taste far more indulgent than you’d expect.
And unlike many overly sweet blue drinks, the cardamom syrup adds quiet spice and depth, balancing the citrus and giving the cocktail a more refined finish.
Ingredients for a Blue Moon Cocktail
Blue Curaçao – This vivid blue citrus liqueur gives the cocktail its signature moonlit color, along with a sweet orange note that blends beautifully with vodka and coconut.
Vodka – Vodka is the foundation of the drink, offering a clean, neutral spirit that lets the citrus, coconut, and spice come through. Its classic potato roots also inspired the earthy, lunar symbolism in this recipe.
Coconut Milk – Full-fat coconut milk gives the cocktail richness, volume, and a smooth, velvety texture. It tempers the citrus and helps create that dreamy, cloudlike layer near the top.
Sugar – Sugar is used for both the cardamom simple syrup and the candied orange garnish. It balances the tart edge of the Curaçao and keeps the drink tasting polished and smooth.
Cardamom Seeds – Cardamom brings a warm, floral spice with a faint citrus note. It takes the cocktail from sweet to something far more interesting.
Orange Rind – Fresh orange peel echoes the citrus in the Curaçao and doubles as a beautiful garnish.
Ice – Ice chills the drink fast and helps create the smooth, frothy finish that comes from a good shake.
Tools You’ll Need
Small Skillet – A small skillet gives you enough room to toast the cardamom seeds and make the infused coconut syrup without burning anything.
Why It Matters – Toasting spices before infusing them unlocks their essential oils and brings out much more flavor.
Cocktail Shaker – A shaker blends the coconut milk, vodka, Curaçao, and syrup until everything is well combined.
Why It Matters – A proper shake gives the cocktail a silky feel and a light froth that makes it look cloudlike.

Why It Matters – A smooth syrup makes for a cleaner, more polished cocktail.
Cocktail Picks or Small Skewers – These help shape the whimsical orange ribbon garnish.
Why It Matters – The garnish turns a simple drink into something memorable and conversation-worthy.
How to Make a Blue Moon Cocktail
Step 1: Make the Cardamom Coconut Simple Syrup
Add the cardamom seeds to a small skillet over medium-low heat.
Gently crush the seeds as they warm. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon sugar over them and keep stirring.
As soon as the sugar starts to melt, pour in 2 tablespoons coconut milk and take the pan off the heat right away.
Stir until the mixture is smooth.
Strain it through a fine mesh sieve and let it chill before using.
Featured Snippet Tip: Toasting cardamom before making simple syrup releases the aromatic oils that give the syrup a deeper, fuller flavor.
Step 2: Create the Candied Orange Garnish
With a vegetable peeler, slice long strips of orange peel about 4 inches long and ¼ inch wide.
Set a skillet over medium heat and add the remaining sugar.
When it melts, add the orange strips and gently shake the pan so the sugar lightly clings to the rind.
Let the candied peel cool completely.
Use a cocktail pick to thread through the rind in a woven pattern, creating a ribbon-like or snake-like shape.
Store in the refrigerator until you’re ready to serve.
Step 3: Shake the Blue Moon Cocktail
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.
Add:
- 1 shot Blue Curaçao
- 2 shots vodka
- Prepared cardamom coconut syrup
- Remaining coconut milk
Shake hard for 20 to 30 seconds.
Step 4: Serve
Strain into a chilled martini glass.
Lay the candied orange ribbon across the rim.
Serve right away while it’s cold and frothy.
Tips for the Best Blue Moon Cocktail
- Choose full-fat coconut milk for the richest, creamiest texture.
- Let the syrup chill before mixing so the drink comes together more smoothly.
- Toast the cardamom gently so it doesn’t turn bitter.
- Freeze your martini glasses for a frosty, elegant presentation.
- Prepare the candied orange garnish up to two days ahead.

Full Moon – Supermoon
So what makes a full moon such a big deal?
Even if astrology isn’t your thing, if you’re a doctor, nurse, ambulance worker, or anyone on an emergency-room shift during a full moon, you may have seen the odd shift in energy firsthand.
Strangely enough, the night tends to be busier than average. More women go into labor because of barometric pressure, and more accidents and crimes seem to happen under a full moon. Even crustaceans reportedly enter their fertile cycle when the moon is full. But why?
Astrology and a Full Moon
From a scientific standpoint, the moon clearly affects the tides. Its gravity drives stronger high tides during a full moon.
Since the human body is made up of roughly 60% water, it only makes sense that a full moon might stir things up a little inside us, too. That’s what led me to think a Blue Curacao Cocktail would be the perfect drink to shake, pour, and enjoy in celebration.
A Note About Curacao Liqueur
Traditionally, a Curacao liqueur (blue or orange), is used in a mixed drink because of its intense bitter orange flavor, made from the bitter Seville orange.
Those oranges have a bold, fragrant aroma, which makes them especially powerful when their flavor is extracted for liqueur.
The oil in the peel also helps carry and deepen the flavor once it’s extracted, and when it’s softened by coconut milk, the result is a cocktail that’s a little unexpected in the best way.

-
Small skillet
-
Cocktail shaker
-
2 Cocktail sticks
- 1 shot Blue Curacao 3 tbsp
- 2 shots Vodka 6 tbsp
- 1/2 cup Coconut milk plus 2 tbsp for simple syrup
- 2 tbsp Sugar
- 3 Cardamom seeds
- Orange rind for garnish
- 1/2 cup Ice
-
Simple Syrup, in a small hot pan, lightly toast the seeds, crushing them as they warm. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of sugar across the seeds, stir, and watch closely so as not to burn. Pour 2 tablespoons of coconut milk into the pan and remove quickly from heat. Stir, strain and chill.
-
Orange Rind Garnish, peel long strips of an orange rind: 4 inches long x 1/4 inch wide. In a medium warm pan, add remaining sugar to melt, be careful not to burn. Add the strips and shake the pan giving the rind a chance to release a tiny bit of its oil, causing the sugar to stick to it. Cool, then weave a cocktail garnish stick, small kabob stick or appetizer stick in and out of the rind, giving it a snake-like look. Set aside. These can be made in advance and kept in the fridge.
-
Place ice in a shaker cup. Add vodka, Curacao, spicy simple syrup, and coconut milk. Give a good shake, pour and place a prepared orange rind garnish across the top.
